Overview

The Gem Leadership Conference (GLC) is a high-impact convening platform by Gem Hub Initiative designed to accelerate youth economic empowerment by bridging the gap between policy, skills development, and market opportunities.

Launched in 2025, GLC responds to a critical national challenge:

While Nigeria admits 10–12 million young people into the labor market annually, only ~3 million formal jobs are created, leaving millions underemployed or excluded from economic participation.

GLC addresses this gap by convening government, private sector, development partners, and young people to co-create scalable solutions that drive employment, entrepreneurship, and systems transformation.

GLC 1.0 at a Glance (2025)

  • Theme: Unlocking Youth Potential for Economic Growth and Innovation
  • Date: November 25, 2025
  • Participants: 120 Persons gathered physically and virtually.
  • Stakeholders: Government officials, policymakers, development partners, private sector leaders, and youth advocates
  • Convening Power: Multi-sector representation across education, health, technology, agriculture, and industry

The Development Challenge

Nigeria’s youth population represents a powerful demographic asset—yet systemic barriers continue to limit its potential:

  • 33%+ youth unemployment rate
  • Significant mismatch between education and industry needs
  • Limited access to practical skills and work-based learning
  • Low awareness and uptake of government and financing opportunities
  • Growing demand for digital and future-of-work skills
  • Weak coordination between policy, implementation, and access

Without targeted, scalable interventions, these gaps will continue to constrain national productivity and inclusive growth.

Our Strategic Approach

GLC is designed as more than a conference, it is a systems-level intervention platform that:

1. Bridges policy and practice by facilitating direct engagement between young people and policymakers to improve policy awareness, accessibility, and accountability.

2. Strengthens education-to-employment pathways by promoting industry-aligned learning, internships, and apprenticeship models that transition youth from skills acquisition to income generation.

3. Accelerates digital and future skills by equipping young people with knowledge of high-demand sectors including:

  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Data analytics
  • Digital entrepreneurship

4. Unlocks access to Finance and Opportunities by connecting youth to existing financing mechanisms and national programs, including:

  • National Youth Investment Fund
  • Bank of Industry grants
  • Youth credit and enterprise platforms

5. Drives cross-sector collaboration by engaging government, private sector, and civil society in coordinated, whole-of-society solutions.

Key Outcomes and Early Results

GLC 1.0 delivered measurable progress across multiple fronts:

1. Increased access to opportunities: participants gained direct exposure to national programs, funding platforms, and digital learning pathways, addressing critical information gaps.

2. Strengthened Multi-Stakeholder Engagement: the conference facilitated collaboration between:

  • Government institutions
  • Development organizations
  • Private sector actors
  • Youth-led initiatives

3. Shift toward systems thinking: stakeholders aligned on the need to move from:

  • Fragmented youth programs → Integrated development systems
  • Skills training → Employment and income pathways

4. Priority Focus Areas Identified

  • Digital skills and AI adoption
  • Internship and apprenticeship systems
  • Youth financing and credit access
  • Agricultural and creative industry value chains
  • Mental health and youth resilience

Investment Rationale

Investing in GLC offers partners a unique opportunity to:

  • Reach and influence a large youth demographic at scale
  • Support evidence-informed, systems-level interventions
  • Strengthen policy-to-impact pipelines
  • Enable workforce readiness and economic inclusion
  • Contribute to SDGs 4, 8, and 10 (Quality Education, Decent Work, Reduced Inequalities)

GLC is positioned as a scalable national platform with the potential to expand across states and sectors, creating sustained impact beyond a single convening.
